Statistics from US trade data shows that Kenya's textile and apparel exports to US have declined by more than 13 percent in the current year. During first three months of present fiscal year, sale has dropped to $56.8 million as compared to $65.6 million for the same period last year.
Even though US Congress have recently made amendments in the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to boost Kenyan textile sector, downturn continues as clothing export to US was $263.8 million in 2006, as compared to $271 million in 2005.
Experts from US state department analyze the reasons behind this decline and pointed out that Asian manufacturers are giving tough fight to Kenyan clothings in the US market. Labour conditions here are not very face-lifting, workers in Export Processing Zone (EPZ) are having hard times.
The US through AGOA is trying to help Kenya and other eligible countries develop their own fabric production.
