Textile sector to generate 2 cr jobs by 2012

Shankersinh Vaghela, the Union Textile Minister while speaking to Media, in Ahmedabad on May 25, said that the textile and clothing sector has drawn an investment of Rs64,478 crore during last three years and is expected to touch Rs1,50,600 crore by 2012.

Gujarat textile industry's share in this total investment is accounted for 22 percent.

Vaghela emphasizes that Government's encouraging strategies have made this thing possible. The plan allocations for textile for the year of 2007-08 have increased by 66 percent than previous year.

The Minister declared that in last three years textile sector has generated over 25 lakh jobs in the country and by 2012, it is expected this number might touch two crores including 1.2 crore direct and around 80 lakhs indirect jobs.

The Minister also said that under Technology Upgradation Fund scheme, 18 mills belonging to National Textile Corporation (NTC) were being refurbished with latest technology by an investment of Rs90 crores. Rajnagar-II mill from Gujarat has received this privilege.

In order to promote the handloom sector, Rs100-crore handloom mall was being set up at Jehangir Mill in Ahmedabad.

According to Vaghela, Government is providing infrastructural facilities for textile and clothing industry and has approved 30 textile parks including seven for Gujarat by investing Rs40 crores for each project.
