Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, adviser for Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh will be visiting Song Min-soon, the South Korean Foreign and Trade Minister, in Seoul on June 4, for a discussion on improving bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Chowdhury, during his four-day visit, will also meet the South Korean Labour Minister and sign an MoU on recruitment of Bangladeshi workforce under a new arrangement - Employment Permit System (EPS).
For last five years, no workers from Bangladesh were allowed to work in Korea. Currently, the number of Bangladeshi people working in Korea is about 12,000, of which 80 percent are staying illegally.
The MoU would permit Bangladeshi workers to get jobs in Korea legally. Under the EPS, South Korea will recruit a total of some 50,000 skilled manpower from 14 countries, including Bangladesh.
After signing of the MoU, the Bangladeshi workers will enjoy the benefit of working legally like those from Thailand, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, China and Cambodia.
