Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicate March 2007 slaughtering levels for sheep and lambs were higher year-on-year with an additional 208,000 head removed from the Australian flock compared with March 2006.
Live sheep exports from Western Australia for the first three quarters of 2006/07 were virtually identical to the 2.855 million head exported over the same period in the 2005/06 season. In contrast, live sheep exports from the eastern states recorded strong growth.
In the short term this trend is unlikely to abate, given another wave of selling of livestock occurring in April as the drought continued. By mid-April, significant increases in sheep, lambs and cattle were once again making their way into sale-yards, as feed and water problems continued to escalate across eastern Australia.
Given this and that last season the Australian flock also declined dramatically, a decline in sheep and lamb numbers of 5% or 5 million head for the 2006/07 season looks assured.
