A two-day Annual Research Meet on Cotton was held on June 14 & 15, 07 in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). About 100 TNAU scientists involved in cotton research attended the Meet in order to assess the status of their research and to finalise the action plan for the forthcoming year.
The plenary session was held on June15, 07, which was presided over by Dr.C.Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU.
The Vice-Chancellor while flagging off current issues and challenges in the cotton sector pointed out that India ranks one among the top five textile economies in the world today and therefore the country needs to play a greater role in cotton economy.
After the removal of quantitative trade restrictions in the wake of globalisation, production of yarn and textiles for export has increased considerably, with only China as the close competitor. The year 2006-07 has been a comfortable year for cotton production, with exports crossing 50 lakh bales to China, which is largely contributed by Bt cotton.
However, a contrasting picture exists in Tamil Nadu due to the growing gap between demand and supply, which is currently 70 lakh bales and 4-4.5 lakh bales, respectively. The Industry is therefore forced to spend huge amounts of money for transporting cotton from other states to Tamil Nadu.
The Vice-Chancellor therefore urged the scientists to give more thrust to productivity increase by means of developing new varieties and hybrids with enhanced genetic capability; increasing biotechnology applications; evolving new Bt varieties; and developing improved management and plant protection practices.
