Sources from Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) reveal that irregular power supply in Tamil Nadu is building up great losses for the textile industry.

It is also facing difficult pospects of competing with the global and domestic markets on account of higher power tariffs.

As per SIMA source, Andhra Pradesh is open to supply power in future to the High Tension (HT) power consumers and new commercial investors for the first five years within the State, permitting 50,000 spindle capacity mills to save money on the tariff.

Textile industry of Tamil Nadu falls mainly under the Small Scale Industries (SSI) and non SSI categories, jointly making them single largest consumers of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. In fact these industries have 45 percent share of the total spinning capacity of the country.

Electricity tariff as well as uninterrupted supply of power should be at par with contending countries and Andhra Pradesh helping its neighbour, would sustain competitiveness of the textile industry in Tamil Nadu.

In the current year, disruption of power even for a minute is a serious concern for textile industry, as this led to a great loss during the last fiscal. The situation in the recent months has worsened, because of losses accured from under utilization of machinery, which is almost 10 percent.
