Climate change plays tricks on textile, clothing industry – DB Research

Sometime last month, Greenland was heard cracking. So loud was the volume of the ice cracking that some compared it to thunderclaps. At around the same time, Germany was sweltering under an unprecedented rise in temperature.

Examples of such erratic climate change have only shot up in recent times. The global weatherman is perturbed. A steady rise in temperatures the world over has confounded him. Global temperatures have risen by over 0.7C in the last 300 years; 0.5C of this warming occurred during the 20th century.

No wonder environmental activists are raising a hue and cry over emissions of Greenhouse gases and registering strong protests against global warming. Senior Economist at Deutsche Bank Research Eric Heymann has raised similar concerns and highlighted the effects that climate change can have on various aspects of life, be it politics, industry, agriculture and textile and clothing sector.

In a study entitled 'Climate change and sectors: Some like it hot', Heymann has pointed out that 'planning reliability for the clothing industry has fallen.' He says in the report that manufacturers are baffled by unreliable climate cycles and it has become increasingly difficult for them to sell a clothing line that does not correspond with the expected weather conditions. Imagine stitching up a whole winter wear wardrobe in advance only to find it's still hot outside!
