A Rs 45-crore park to exclusively showcase Pochampally-branded products will be set at Kanumukkula village, situated about 10 km from Pochampally. This initiative rides the high wave of GI recognition that the Ikkat (tie and dye) textile brand received.

Citing business opportunities, textile majors like Westside and Reliance Textiles have already approached the authority concerned with the project. A total of 28 weavers have joined hands to set shop in the park.

While the equity component of Rs 3 crore will be brought in by the weavers, the debt component will be funded through an association of 15 banks headed by IL&FS. Under the Central Government's Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks (SITP), the park will get a grant of about Rs 7.5 crore.

Construction work has already started at the site which will house 2,000 looms divided in six blocks. Though the project is aimed at tapping both the domestic and international markets, the focus is more on the latter.

One of the weavers told reporters, "The idea is to try out direct exports through the park by leveraging on the GI mark." Near home, Reliance Textiles and Westside want weavers to produce as per their designs. Reliance Textiles has already signed in cooperation of some of the 28 weavers.

According to a Reliance Textiles spokesperson, nearly 75 percent of the weavers' production will be cotton-based, while only 25 percent will be based on silk. "We will be weaving more of fabrics, bedspreads and other home furnishings at the park", he said, adding that the park would give jobs to at least 5,000 weavers.

Apart from setting up a committee consisting of some member weavers, officials from the state and Central Government, Mumbai-based Ikkat researcher Chelna Desai has also been appointed to guide weavers in their work.

In order to bring in specialization, the whole process in the park will be divided into separate segments and given to different weavers. This will ensure smooth functioning of the park and prevent any bottlenecks.
