After EU, China turns to US on textile issues

Sep '05
Officials in China heaved a sigh of relief yesterday, as the 25 members of the EU Parliament gave the green signal to free the textile consignments held at various European ports.

It all began with the EU and China entering in to an agreement in June on fixing the textile quotas with the cutoff of July 12.

Meanwhile Chinese suppliers kept on pushing sweater, trousers and other clothings that had crossed the permitted limits of imports.

Following protest from textile making countries like France, Italy, Spains and others, EU was forced to block imported Chinese textiles that began piling at several European seaports.

Chinese officials and EU representatives huddled over the negotiating table for days on to solve the issues.

This fully strecthced EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson to fly to Beijing and search for an amicable solution to the exceeded textile imports.

Finally, Mandelson and the Chinese Commerce Minister agreed to a solution that would allow release of the 80 million pieces of textiles by bringing ahead the 2006 textile quotas this.

Meanwhile, retailers began condeming the blocking and drummed up support for their as fears clothing scarcity and price increases loomed large.

But the last lap of getting 25 European member states apporve the deal was yet to be achieved.

It was yesterday, that the agreement received the official approval at the European Parliament.

Now, where to asks the Chinese?
