Southampton County's cotton processing plant, near Franklin is blazing high with fire. It was during afternoon that the fire broke out in the storage bin at South Hampton Gin. The plant is located in the 29000 block of General Thomas Highway, Route 671.
Firefighters from Portsmouth's have been called for help as the local department is finding it difficult to control it. The sources state that the cotton seeds inside a large steel storage building have been burning at a low temperature and that these types of fires burn for a long time.

The fire was within a couple of feet of the roof of the bin, which is expected to have a capacity of more than a million square feet. The firefighters are trying to keep the blaze from spreading beyond the storage unit.

Even the road which runs by the plant from Shady Break Trail to Handsom Road is closed. Also the traffic is derouted due to thick smoke which has reduced visibility.
