Today Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) welcomed the decision by Justice Hely of the Federal Court of Australia to allow its amended statement of claim and accept its application to serve proceedings on PETA and people associated with it in the United States.
Les Targ, Deputy CEO of AWI said: “This is a great victory for Australian woolgrowers who are now able to pursue a court action to stop PETA harassing retailers in an attempt to enforce a boycott against Australian wool producers.”
Justice Hely also ruled that Ms Ingrid Newkirk, President of PETA, pay AWI's costs in relation to her unsuccessful strike-out application.
Mr Targ said the Australian Wool and Sheep Industry Taskforce, which represents all peak national sheep and wool industry bodies, would do everything in its power to stop PETA damaging
the industry.
“The broader Taskforce strategy is to build relationships with its business partners and prevent animal extremists like PETA from interfering with how producers care for their sheep or how retailers conduct their business,” he said.
“AWI has enjoyed the support of 104 co-applicants in this case, who will now feel that their willingness to stand up and be counted has been vindicated. The company thanks them for their continued support.
“The strong support of state farmer organisations and other wool industry participants has also been appreciated." says the release.
