Declining employment in organized sector

Employment in the organised sector in the country has gone down to 26.46 million as on 31-03-2005 from 28.11 million as on 31-03-1999.

The details of employment in organised sector from 1999 to 2005 (latest available) as on 31 March are given below.

The 11th Plan Document, approved by National Development Council, has projected that 58 million job opportunities are likely to be created during the 11the Plan period.

The additional employment opportunities in the future will be generated mainly in the services and manufacturing sectors, in particular, labour intensive manufacturing sectors such as food processing, leather products, footwear, and textiles, and service sectors such as tourism and construction.

This information was given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Shri Oscar Fernandes in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
