During a meeting held to discuss 'Strategy for Enhancing Textile Exports', Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani asked the ministry of textile to prepare a detailed plan for improving production of cotton in order to meet the growing domestic and export demand for the raw material.

The Prime Minister emphasized on the fact that textile industry is the backbone of Pakistan's economy and improving on quality and quantity of cotton would definitely go a long way in strengthening the competitiveness of the domestic sector in the global market.

The PM strongly believes that focusing on regions that promises optimum yield of cotton is one of the best means to ensure high quality, cost-effective and profitable cultivation of the crop.

In response to the urgency expressed by the PM, Secretary of the textile ministry briefed the attendees about the present status of the industry and proposed measures that have already been implemented to boost exports.

Statistical survey in the recent months have revealed that for over a couple of years, domestic cotton consumption has far exceeded the production rate impelling the industry to opt for imports from Indian and China. However, bringing an end to this trend is one of the main priorities on the list of the textile ministry.
