Rural women create beautiful embroidery clothing

Sadhna, a NGO trains rural women in textiles and then employs them and helps them stand on their own feet. Sadhna recently opened an exhibition in Mumbai to display the works of rural their artisans
The range on display is a vibrant sea of colours, which includes hand embroidered bed-sheets and pillow covers, saris and dupattas. Most of the work done on the products is patch work embroidery, which involves stitching overlapping fabrics and is now the rage, though off course an art developed out of necessity in rural India.
Sadhna deals in the production, manufacturing and marketing of handcrafted products, which are produced by these artisans members. The product range consists of garments such as kurtas, tops, stoles, saris, dupattas, skirts etc along with soft home furnishings and accessories such as bags, pouches etc. All the products are created out of hand woven, hand printed fabrics, mainly in cotton and silk.
The core employees consist of women from poor rural background who are given training for a period of three months and are able to earn between Rs 500 and Rs 2,000, while working from their homes.
A small group of 15 has grown into a large family of 379 women artisan members. Not only that, but today Sadhna stands proud as an autonomous member owned enterprise where women play a significant role in all aspects of decision making. This initiative from Sadhna has helped poor rural women to earn a livelihood and stand on their own feet.
