Abaya Design competition searches for untapped talent

One of the UAE's most popular design awards is back and the search has begun to discover untapped fashion talent in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
The CRYSTALLIZED Abaya Design Awards, sponsored by CRYSTALLIZED – Swarovski Elements and supported by the Abu Dhabi Ladies Club, is once again being hosted by The Bride Show Abu Dhabi, the must-attend bridal and fashion event for women in the capital.
The competition, which is open to every member of the public, was launched for the first time in 2007 and provides a unique opportunity for aspiring fashion designers to create stunningly beautiful Abayas embellished with CRYSTALLIZED – Swarovski Elements.
Ten finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their design, presented on the catwalk by professional models, on the final day of The Bride Show Abu Dhabi, which takes place from 21-24 January 2009 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
“The CRYSTALLIZED Abaya Design Awards was a fantastic finale to The Bride Show Abu Dhabi and this year we are anticipating an unprecedented response from sewing-savvy fashionistas,” said Christine Weaver, Exhibition Director for The Bride Show.
“This competition is about finding the balance between modernity and tradition. It is a competition which can confront stereotypes and widen perceptions of the traditional Arab dress. Furthermore, it recognises creativity and innovation in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain which might otherwise remain anonymous.”
The winner of the inaugural awards was Abu Dhabi resident, Eiman Al Marzouqi, whose design was chosen by a panel of esteemed judges in front of thousands of cheering supporters at The Bride Show Abu Dhabi. Now, another untapped talent has the chance to shine.
A free seminar, hosted by CRYSTALLIZED – Swarovski Elements, to provide guidance and advice to applicants will take place at the Abu Dhabi Ladies Club on 6 November at 6 p.m. This will provide entrants direct access to the creative teams behind CRYSTALLIZED – Swarovski Elements, one of the world's most respected fashion brands, as well as inspiration and focus from the panel of judges.
Swarovski, the world's leading producer of precision-cut crystal was established in 1895 and has since its earliest days worked hand in hand with leading designers and couturiers. CRYSTALLIZED – Swarovski Elements, the company's product brand for the innovative and inspirational loose crystal elements pays homage to the company's long history of mutually creative collaboration with the world of fashion.
