Railways are one of the most important components of the infrastructure of any country and hence pass through a wide range of terrain and ground conditions. Railway engineers face a variety of problems associated with soils and water.
Geosynthetic products have tremendous potential in solving many of these problems. To achieve high levels of safety, performance and operational efficiency and to reduce the cost and time of construction, it is imperative to look for alternatives to traditional methods of construction.
International experience indicates that use of geosynthetics could be of great benefit in finding cost effective solutions to many of the problems faced by railway engineers.
