The small mountainous and landlocked country of Nepal has received a first of sorts. The country has recently received and has been able to register, the first of its international patent rights (IPR) for the Pashmina from Norway.

Pashmina is one of the most exportable goods from Nepal and it also has been able to create a mark in fashion capitals of the world and at one time was the third biggest export revenue generator from the country.

Manufacturers of the Pashmina had applied for registering the patent with several countries in a bid to differentiate the product from the likes of cashmere which is sold and exported from the likes of India and China.

Exports of Pashmina which had stood at Rs 7 billion in 2000, slid to just Rs 540 million in the previous year, due to aggressive marketing of the cashmere fabric by the Chinese in the last few years.

Experts say that, this patent will help Pashmina exports from Nepal to regain their lost glory across the fashion capitals of the world in the markets of the US, European Union and Japan.
