Mauritius to repatriate Bangladeshi apparel sector workers

According to news emanating from Mauritius, the government is planning to send back thousands of Bangladeshi migrant workers, a majority of whom work in the clothing factories in Mauritius.

As is happening with the rest of the economies across the globe, the Mauritian economy too is facing a period of acute crisis leading to a contraction of the economy, leading to job losses in large numbers.

By taking this action of repatriating migrant workers, the government is trying to save jobs of local people, but according to experts, the locals are not interested in working in the apparel manufacturing units.

Mauritius which has an export oriented clothing industry has seen shipments falling with each passing year since the dismantling of quotas in 2005 and the economic crisis of the last few months has dealt a big blow to the sector.

Though these workers are highly skilled workers and Bangladesh too has a thriving garment manufacturing industry, it will be difficult for these workers to get jobs in Bangladesh due to the slowdown.
