'Shared Talent' to promote sustainable Indian textiles

Jul '09
Shared Talent India, one of London College of Fashion's Centre for Sustainable Fashion's (CSF) key projects of 2009 funded by Defra and the Indian Government, is now well underway. Born out of collaboration between UK and Indian designers and London College of Fashion (LCF), Pearl Academy India and AMFI Amsterdam Fashion Institute students, the project will explore and promote the design applications of a range of sustainable Indian textiles.

The group will be taking part in a ten day workshop in Delhi at the end of July to produce concepts to showcase Indian sustainable textiles; outcomes will be showcased at Estethica at London Fashion Week in September and Indian Fashion Week in October 2009.

Earlier in the year the Centre for Sustainable Fashion issued a call out for applications from UK-based designers and liaised with Pearl Academy to recruit India-based designers* to take part in the project. The UK-based designers* along with selected AMFI and LCF students*will travel to India and engage in a programme of activity including workshops and active design collaboration to produce concepts to showcase the sustainable textiles. The award winning 'Shared Talent' project model has been developed to find transformative solutions through collaboration and has already been successfully applied to communities in Ghana and South Africa.

To document Shared Talent India London College of Fashion staff and students will write, direct and produce a short film to promote the use of Indian sustainable textiles and their possible fashion applications. The team will record all activities using film and photography and document the journey that the textiles undertake from original conception to purchase by the consumer.

The culmination of the project will be showcased on the Monsoon Stand at Estethica at London Fashion Week in September 2009. The design concepts, the documentary short film directed and produced by the students and an exhibition of the photography from the project will be displayed alongside the launch of an online resource profiling sustainable textiles, Indian suppliers and the design concepts. The exhibition will then travel to Indian Fashion Week 2009.
