EX•TRACTS is a division within the New York International Gift Fair. NYIGF is the nation's premier gift, home and lifestyle marketplace, with 2,900 exhibiting companies featuring an extraordinary breadth and depth of design-driven home fashion products and complementary giftware.

Where: Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York City

When: Sunday, August 16, through Thursday, August 20, 2009

Why it's worth a visit: Trends are born here. This trade-only event offers retailers the newest and most unique personal care, wellness and lifestyle-enhancing products.

Stories can be built around a wide selection of these consumer products, with trends including sustainability, frugal chic, and inspired artisanry.

Exhibitors: 100 innovative and emerging personal care lines, featuring cosmetics, perfumes, skincare, bath & body care, beauty accessories, hair care, natural/organic products and well-being lines.

Attendees: 5,000 spa, salon and specialty retailers. 30,000 retailers in total will attend the larger New York International Gift Fair taking place concurrently at the Javits Center.

1 TREND/GREEN: Consumers want a greener lifestyle of reducing, reusing, and recycling. It's easier than ever to find eco-friendly, affordable gift and home products.

Find it at EX•TRACTS: DayNa Decker is a new designer of "eco-couture" home ambiance products and environmentally-kind bath and body products which are free from parabens, sulfates, glycols, petrolatum, synthetic colors and phthalates.

2 TREND/FRUGAL CHIC: Consumers may not have the same spending power, but they haven't sacrificed a sense of style. These products offer current looks for less.

3 TREND/INSPIRED ARTISANRY: Purchases are made carefully by people seeking a meaningful story behind the products. Artists are sharing the sources of their inspiration with responsive consumers.

Find it at EX•TRACTS: Soular Therapy took its cues from the stars when the company launched its "Astrological Aromatherapy" line of 12 different scents, each designed to fit the wearer according to his or her sign.

The couple who founded Voluspa, an upscale candle manufacturer, named the company for the goddess of wisdom in tales of ancient Scandinavian lore.

TRENDS AND OTHER HOT TOPICS: Beyond the show floor, onsite seminars will provide up-to-the-minute information on business strategies in a down economy, marketing through social media, emerging trends in skincare and organic products, and "green" retail opportunities.
