In addition to providing training in the area of instrument-based colour and white measurements, the Hohenstein institutes in Bönnigheim have recently also begun to offer visual colour analysis training for employees.

Today, colour consistency is considered an important aspect of quality assurance in a variety of industries. Accordingly, the new continuing education training courses are also directed at the textile, paper and plastics industry, as well as importers, retailers and the automotive industry.

Having employees who are trained in visual inspections may prevent expensive complaints in advance. However, not all employees are suited to conduct visual colour analysis due to their visual capacities. Approximately 8% of men and 0.5% of women have an impaired colour perception capacity, which generally appears as so-called red-green blindness.

Depending on the extent of the blindness, individuals are not able to differentiate between green and red colour tones, for example. In contrast to daily life, deficient colour perception can pose a big problem for visual quality assurance activities. Therefore with respect to visual inspections of coatings, DIN EN ISO 3668 prescribes that all employees in charge of these inspections must take the Farnsworth Munsell Hue 100 Test to exclude any colour perception problems.

This test, which requires individuals to configure 85 colour plates according to the colour wheel, is also used at the beginning of the visual colour analysis training courses offered by the Hohenstein institutes. Deviations from the configuration of color samples are analysed by trainers on a computer, and provide information regarding a participant's potential colour perception impairment.

Employees who are suited for colour analysis will be trained by Hohenstein specialists to safely detect visually detectable colour deviations as part of quality assurance activities, under standard light conditions.

Training on visual colour analysis is offered at the Hohenstein institutes (www.hohenstein.de) in Bönnigheim near Heilbronn, and is also available as part of on- site workshops at interested companies.
