Chinese ethylene capacity to witness surge

In next three years, Chinese ethylene production capacity would grow by 44 percent to 19.08 million tons. As was announced earlier, before 2014, five new ethylene production facilities will begin operations, among which, the largest plant has a capacity of 5.8 million tons per year.

At the end of 2007, Chinese total distillation refining capacity touched 8.52 million barrels per day, which was the second largest in the world after the US to garner a 9.7 percent share of the total world refining capacity. At the same time, there were 19 ethylene plants in China with total annual ethylene production capacity of 10.28 million tons.

Currently total ethylene capacity in 2010 has increased to 13.23 million ton per year after two projects of Tianjin Petrochemical and Huajin Chemical Industrial Group went on-stream.

By end of 2010 Zhenhai Oil Refining and Chemical (ZRCC) is coming up with an ethylene plant of annual capacity of one million tons and Baotou Shenhua Coal Chemical is expected to start its ethylene plant of 300,000 tons per year capacity.
