It is a time to rejoice for the wool cultivators in Australia as a year on year rise of 56 percent has been witnessed in the wool prices. Presently the finer 18 micron wool prices are ruling at 1816 cents per kilo which is 56 percent or 625 cents per kilo higher than the prices that prevailed during corresponding period last year.

Ben Litchfield, Manager of the Monaro Wool Services/Schute Bell Badgery Lumby, Cooma revealed that, a considerable rise in the number of buyers from the Chinese market and the re-kindling interest for the fine wools prepared by the Italian processors, are the factors which have mainly driven the current rise in the wool prices.

Also, as the wool supply remained to be low this season due to the climate changes, this too has boosted the prices, he said.

Further, as the markets reopened after the auction sale recess on January 14, the clean wool's average market closing price (Northern AWEX) came to 1208 cents per kilo, after a considerable jump of 135 cents per kilo.

Presently, the finer clean wools, namely the 19 microns and other finer varieties are drawing highest prices in the range of 1800 to 2000 cents per kilo.
