Carpet exports bloom but labour scarcity hinders growth

The country's carpet exports have registered a rise of 19.66 percent during the initial nine months of the current fiscal year, as over the corresponding period in the 2009-10 fiscal.

The government has fixed the carpet export target for this fiscal at around $650 million, which seems to be quite achievable, as by end of the third quarter of the current fiscal the country has already exported $ 431.86 million worth of carpets.

The export target for the last fiscal year 2009-10 was fixed at $525 million, while the total exports by close of the third quarter came to around $ 360.92 million.

Thus, with this triumph in current fiscal, the government is likely to fix a higher target for the next financial year. This would also be done in the pursuance of the prospective demand from alternative markets like Latin America, Africa, Middle East, China, Japan and Turkey.

Further that, the carpet exports have a potential to grow at a rate of 25 percent per annum, but the present day labour scarcity is impeding the total production of carpets for export. The carpet manufacturers presently are engaged in production of shaggy rugs, loom carpets and hand-tufted carpets.
