The US National Retail Federation (NRF) and 150 organizations representing US retailers, manufacturers, farmers, technology companies, natural gas and oil companies and other industries recently submitted comments to US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer on the administration’s proposed tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports.

The groups urged the administration to avoid further escalation with China and warned of the negative impact of tariffs on US businesses, families and workers, according to an NRF press release.

“Continuing the tit-for-tat tariff escalation with China only serves to expand the harm to more U.S. economic interests, including farmers, families, businesses and workers,” the coalition wrote in a letter.

“The negative impact will fall particularly hard on small- and medium-sized businesses and their workers, who lack the scale, resources and options to weather or adapt to these tariffs,” the groups said.

The groups expressed concern over the administration’s suggestion that the United States might impose tariffs on all Chinese imports.

In addition to the coalition letter, NRF submitted its own comments to USTRregarding the impact of tariffs on retailers and consumers. (DS)
