May '17
The outlay for the powerloom sector is being increased annually by the government, said textiles minister Smriti Irani. The government had allocated Rs 52 crore for the powerloom sector during 2015-16 and Rs 110 crore in 2016-17, she added after attending Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting on development and modernisation of powerloom sector.

The government has launched the PowerTex India scheme for powerloom weavers that includes subsidies for weaving units for various things like using solar energy or constructing a dormitory for workers, said Irani while talking to the media after the meeting.

Irani has also said that a helpline has been set up for powerloom weavers and they should use to get information regarding various subsidies and schemes introduced for this sector.

Textile commissioner Kavita Gupta also spoke to the reporters about the financial outlay for the powerloom sector and said that it will be Rs 166 crore for this financial year. She also said that the textile policy can be expected to be finalised soon. (KD)
