Vietnam's labour market continued recovery momentum in Q1 2023

  • Vietnam's labour market continued to maintain its recovery momentum in the first quarter (Q1) this year.
  • The average monthly income of employees in Vietnam in Q1 2023 increased by 10 per cent year on year, but men are still earning more than women.

Vietnam’s labour market continued to maintain its recovery momentum in the first quarter (Q1) this year. The average monthly income of employees in Vietnam in Q1 2023 increased by 10 per cent year on year (YoY), but men are still earning more than women, according to data from the General Statistics Office (GSO).

Male workers’ average income per month was 1.36 times higher than that of females during the quarter.

The number of employed people in the quarter continued to rise YoY. The unemployment and underemployment rates in the working age decreased, GSO told a recent press conference.

An employee earned an average of VNÐ7 million ($296.6) a month during the period, an increase of VNÐ640,000 YoY, Pham Hoai Nam, director of the department of population and labour statistics, announced.

The income in urban areas was VNÐ8.6 million compared to VNÐ6.1 million in rural areas.

The country’s labour force grew to 52.2 million workers during the quarter, up by more than a million compared to the same period last year.

The number of unemployed people of working age in the quarter was 1 million—a decrease of 65,100 YoY. The unemployment rate in the working age hit 2.25 per cent—down by 0.21 percentage points YoY.
