World Bank (WB) is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world has announced the 73rd Meeting of the Development Committee will be held on Sunday, April 23rd, 2006 at the World Bank (WB) in Washington.
The Development Committee (DC) is a forum of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund that facilitates intergovernmental consensus- building on development issues.
Known formally as the Joint Ministerial Committee of the Boards of Governors of the Bank and the Fund on the Transfer of Real Resources to Developing Countries, the Committee was established in 1974.
The Committee's mandate is to advise the Boards of Governors of the Bank and the Fund on critical development issues and on the financial resources required to promote economic development in developing countries. Over the years, the Committee has interpreted this mandate to include trade and global environmental issues in addition to traditional development matters.
The following is the agenda of reports that will be discussed at the 2006 spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. We are not a bank in the common sense. We are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 184 member countries—the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA).
Each institution plays a different but supportive role in our mission of global poverty reduction and the improvement of living standards. The IBRD focuses on middle income and creditworthy poor countries, while IDA focuses on the poorest countries in the world.
Together we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credit and grants to developing countries for education, health, infrastructure, communications and many other purposes.
