New Zealand-Malaysia agreed to launch bilateral FTA conferences

The Sixth TNC in Kuala Lumpur from 24-28 April 2006 concluded discussions in six areas, namely Customs Procedures and Cooperation, Intellectual Property, Economic Cooperation, Rules of Origin, SPS Measures and Technical Barriers to Trade.
Discussions on Goods, Competition Policy and Legal and Institutional Issues are close to conclusion. Services, Investment and Trade Remedies require further detailed discussions while fundamental difficulties remain on inclusion of Government Procurement, Labour and Environment in the FTA.
Benefits
The FTA can be used to:
Address high tariffs for products of export interest to Malaysia, including electrical and electronic products, textiles and apparel and auto parts.
address non-tariff measures, in particular technical barriers, including stringent SPS measures.
facilitate trade through establishment of mutual recognition agreements of product standards and tests, particularly for agricultural products and environmental goods.
facilitate two-way investment flows in areas of common interest such as agriculture and agro-based industries as well as biotechnology.
Malaysia's trade with New Zealand has been expanding over the last ten years, from RM1.0 billion in 1994 to RM3.3 billion in 2005.
