In 2005, Malaysia's exports of textiles and apparel, increased by 6.2 per cent to RM10.3 billion, compared with RM9.7 billion in 2004. This was partly contributed to by the increase of exports of textiles and apparel by 4.5 per cent to the EU market, which was previously subject to quotas.
For the period January to May 2006, investments approved in the manufacturing sector, from both domestic and foreign sources, totalled RM10.9 billion, in 372 manufacturing projects.
Between January 2005 and June 2006, MITI, through MATRADE and MIDA, organised a total of 293 trade promotion programmes and activities, and 14 trade and investment missions were mounted to 20 countries, including the USA, the UK, Germany, Italy, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Turkey, Kuwait, Oman, Indonesia and Cambodia.
In 2005, these promotional activities and missions generated potential sales of RM12 billion. For the second half of 2006, MITI will be organising 6 trade and investment missions, namely, to Australia, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Lao PDR and the USA.
Malaysian exporters will need to take advantage of the FTAs, and multilateral initiatives, to explore market opportunities, arising from the liberalisation of the industrial, agriculture and services sectors, in both the developed and developing countries.
Ranking has placed Malaysia ahead of several countries, such as Germany, which was ranked at 26th position, Thailand (32nd position), France (35th position), Republic of Korea (38th position), and Italy (56th position).
