Textile products shows highest growth of 35.1% for May, reports MSPI

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of May 2005 was released here today, by the Central Statistical Organisation, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MSPI).
The General Index stands at 213.0, which is 10.8% higher as compared to the level in the month of May 2004.
As many as 14 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of May 2005 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.
'Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel)' have shown the highest growth of 35.1%, followed by 15.9% in 'Machinery and Equipment other than Transport Equipment' and 14.6% in 'Basic Chemicals & Chemical Products (except products of Petroleum & Coal)'.
On the other hand, 'Wool, Silk and Man-made Fibre Textiles' have shown a negative growth of 6.6% followed by a decline of 2.7% in 'Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures' as well as in 'Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except cotton)'.
The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of May 2005 stand at 155.2, 222.7, and 196.7 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 3.7%, 11.5% and 10.6% as compared to May 2004.
The cumulative growth during April-May, 2005-06 over the corresponding period of 2004-05 in the three sectors have been 3.2%, 10.5% and 6.8% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 9.6%
