Students need to market themselves, VDMA

The Walter Reiners foundation part of the VDMA Textile Machinery Association honoured three successful Junior Engineers.
The promotion and creativity prizes, endowed with a total of 10.000 Euro, were awarded by the foundation's new President, Peter D. Dornier, Chairman of the Board of Lindauer Dornier GmbH, in the course of a ceremony in Dresden.
In his speech, Dornier outlined challenges to the German university system and encouraged junior scholars to study in the shortest possible space of time: “These days, the cue “time to market” not only applies to companies and their products, but also to students."
"Those who complete their studies faster, are available to the job market sooner. Don't regard your study as end in itself, but expressly as a basis for meeting the exciting challenges of the professional practice in a timely manner” explained Dornier.
Concerning attempts to change doctorate procedures in Germany, he voted for keeping up engineer graduation as an independent professional stage.
This year, the promotion prize for the best dissertation was awarded to Dr.-Ing. Thomas Leopold of TU Dresden. His thesis dealt with the development of semi-finished textile parts for bonded fibre fabrics.
The promotion prize for the best diploma thesis was awarded to Ms Stéphanie Houis of RWTH Aachen, whose paper dealt with the production of chemical fibres. Ingo Berbig of TU Chemnitz received the creativity award for his work on the construction of a winder for wood wool ropes.
With the two promotion awards for dissertations and diploma thesis and the creativity prize for term papers, the Walter Reiners foundation once a year honours students of engineering and graduates who have developed especially innovative solutions for textile machinery engineering.
