PSLFTA helps expand Sri Lankan exports

The High Commission is trying its best to bridge this gap. These efforts include our plans to organize a few major seminars on the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement in major commercial cities of Pakistan, this year. First such Seminar will hopefully be held in Karachi on the sidelines of Expo 2007.

Both Pakistani and Sri Lankan business communities should essentially use the FTA as a spring board for enhancing bilateral trade activity, rather than using it as the 'primary' or the 'only' channel of trading with each other. There is a considerable scope for expansion of trade activity in non-traditional sectors, mostly not covered under the FTA.

Pakistan recently signed an FTA with China. Sri Lanka on the other hand has its FTA with India. These and other regional FTAs have literally laid open these huge economies and markets to everyone. It is purely up to the individual businesses how they try to benefit from these new economic frameworks.

Expansion of regional trade is one plausible way to withstand the challenges of Globalization, liberalization and increased competition.
