A one-day Stakeholders Interactive Meeting on Geographical Indication Act and Prospects of Decentralised Textiles Sectors of West Bengal at Hotel ITC Sonar, Kolkata on 12th September 2007, has been organised under GOI-UNCTAD-DFID project “Strategies and Preparedness for Trade & Globalisation in the Textiles & Clothing Sectors in India” by Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India; United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD); Textiles Committee, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, Mumbai and West Bengal Hosiery Association (WHA), Kolkata.
The programme was organised with the active participation of the stakeholders. The main objective of the meeting was to sensitise the stakeholders about the importance and benefits of the IPR Protection and the procedural aspects involved in filing application before the competent authority for registration.
The meeting also tried to identify the problems of the Textiles & Clothing Sector of West Bengal and prepare a future road map for selective intervention under the project with the active support of the state Government.
Inaugural Session: Smt Krishna Gahalawat, Chairperson, Textiles Committee, Mumbai inaugurated the interactive workshop. At the outset Dr. P. Nayak welcomed the Chief Guest Smt. Gahalawat, Chairperson, Textiles Committee, Mumbai; Shri Pawan Agarwal, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Kolkata; Shri S. Chaturvedi, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of West Bengal; Shri B. Naik, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, Kolkata; Shri K.B. Agarwala, Managing Director, Rupa & Co. Ltd., Kolkata and Shri D.P. Jadeja, Director (Cluster Development), Textiles Committee, Mumbai.
