The increasing standards of living have thrown open new vistas for application of technology in areas of technical textiles. The application is spread across various sectors like infrastructure, health care, agriculture, packaging, consumer safety, and many more.

In many industrial countries value added technical textiles account for more than 40% of total manufacturing activity. However the contribution of the Indian textile industry towards technical textiles has been restricted to low technology and less sophisticated manufacturing in spite of huge investment and business opportunities for Indian entrepreneurs.

Against this background, The Office of The Textile Commissioner, in association with ICRA Management Consulting Services (IMaCS) has undertaken a baseline survey of the technical textile industry in India to asses the demand-supply scenario as well as interventions required to improve the level of technology, policies and regulations in this industry. This survey touched upon the following areas:

1. Overview of the technical textiles in India
• Agrotech
• Meditech
• Mobiltech
• Packtech
• Sportech
• Buldtech
• Hometech
• Clothtech
• Protech
• Geotech
• Oekotech
• Indutech

2. Non-woven sector of technical textile
3. Details of raw materials to manufacture technical textiles
4. Technical textile machinery
5. Testing facilities for technical textile in India
6. Standards for technical textiles in other countries
7. Policies & regulations mandating and regulating the use of technical textiles products
8. List of selected products.

As NITRA is identified as one of the centers of excellence to promote technical textiles, request you to go through the said draft report and pass on your valuable comments/suggestions to NITRA or directly to the Office of The Textile Commissioner (textilec@gmail.com) so that the report can be finalized taking into views of all stake holders.
