The International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers Federation (ITGLWF) has announced that WTO ministerial meeting in next month at Hong Kong must discuss specifically on the impact of trade liberalisation on textiles and clothing industry in countries which are expected to face their textile trade `burnout'.
In this regard, ITGLWF has appealed the trade unions to persuade their respective local governments to present the agenda for WTO developing measures to help rising industries adjust to meet the threats set by leading manufacturers like China.
Textiles and clothing should be separated from the general negotiations in the Hong Kong meeting and dealt with independently to protect jobs in the industry in the poorest countries, said, Neil Kearney, the federation General Secretary.
The most dismal predictions for trade and employment trends for 2005 have not turned up and the industry remained comparatively steady in countries predicted for burnout this year.
