ABC pulls fur garment after protest by PETA

ABC Distributing, LLC—one of Florida's leading private employers—has pulled a rabbit-fur garment from its catalog after protest from PETA and pledged "to look more closely into the nature of the fabric of the items we sell." Joseph H. Kaplan, esq., Vice President and General Counsel of the 50-year-old company, told PETA that its letter had gone "a long way toward educating us as to the extant cruelty of animals, and need to be more critical of the commercial abuses of animals."

More than half of the finished garments imported for sale in the United States come from China, where no laws exist to protect animals on fur farms. Even fur with a European label may have come from an unregulated Chinese fur farm.

Every year, the fur industry is responsible for slaughtering and stealing the skins of millions of foxes, minks, rabbits, baby seals, and other animals. Animals trapped for fur suffer excruciating pain, often for days, before their chests are stomped on or their necks are broken by trappers.

On fur farms, animals spend their entire lives in tiny, filthy cages, where they suffer physical and psychological distress before being killed by poisoning, gassing, anal electrocution, or neck-breaking. Last year, PETA revealed abuses found during an undercover investigation at a Michigan fur farm, including the electrocution and neck-breaking of chinchillas, causing the animals to writhe in agony.

A new undercover investigation shows fur farmers inChina swinging raccoon dogs and foxes by their hind legs and smashing their heads on the ground—breaking the animals' necks or backs but leaving them panting, blinking, and conscious as they are skinned alive. Millions of foxes, raccoons, rabbits, and other animals are killed for fur every year in the exceptionally violent Chinese fur trade.
