DAK Americas to shut down polykron fibers plant in Mexico

Terephthalic acid (TPA) supplier DAK Americas announced it will shut its Polykron Fiber Manufacturing Plant in Monterrey, Mexico on July 31, 2005. The Polykron facility has been in operation for over 40 years and has been a member of the Alfa family of companies since 1975. The facility, which produces Polyester Staple Fiber (PSF), currently employs approximately 150 employees.

DAK Americas will consolidate and transfer the polyester staple fiber products produced at the Polykron facility to its remaining PSF manufacturing facilities in the U.S., located near Wilmington, NC and Charleston, SC. The closure of the facility will not impact the service levels provided to DAK's valued fiber customers in both the U.S. and Mexico.

"It is a painful decision to make," said Hector Camberos, President, DAK Americas. "The closure is the result of the continued struggle, over the last several years, that our textile business has faced in wake of the significant increases in imports of finished products into the NAFTA region." This increase in imports, magnified by the Jan. 2005 WTO lifting of China quotas has resulted in DAK's restructuring of its PSF manufacturing operations.

"Restructuring DAK's fibers business will allow DAK to continue to produce the highest quality products, reduce its cost structure, and increase the operational efficiencies of its remaining PSF manufacturing facilities." said Jon McNaull, DAK Americas recently appointed Fibers BusinessDirector. "DAK Americas will continue to serve its valuable fibers customers in both the U.S. and Mexico from its remaining PSF facilities in the U.S."
