The Australian wool market finished 1.3% lower, on average, at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle this week against a further 2.2% appreciation of the US exchange rate.
The AWEX EMI fell by 14¢ (-1.5%), ending the week at 919¢/kg. This reflected decreases of 14¢ (-1.5%) in the North and 14¢ (-1.5%) in the South, with their corresponding Regional Indicators finishing the week at 948¢ and 894¢ clean, respectively. The Western Indicator fell by 9¢ (-1.0%), finishing the week at 934¢.
In a three day sale in Sydney and Melbourne, the AWEX EMI fell by 5¢ on Tuesday, by 7¢ on Wednesday and by 2¢ on Thursday. The Western Indicator fell by 10¢ on Wednesday and rose by 1¢ on Thursday in a two day sale in Fremantle.
54,011 bales were on offer, compared with 53,181 bales last week, of which 10.2% were passed in, comprised of 9.6% in Sydney, 8.0% in Melbourne and 15.3% in Fremantle. Pass-in rates for Merino fleece and skirtings were 10.6% and 7.2%, respectively. 1,128 bales (2.0%) were withdrawn prior to sale and re-offered bales made up 9.4% of this week's offering.
The New Zealand Merino Company offered 3,369 bales in Melbourne on Wednesday of which, 15.3% were passed in. 175 bales were withdrawn prior to sale and 2.5% of the bales were re-offers.
The US exchange rate (source RBA) was 0.76¢ higher on Monday when compared with Thursday of last week. It was down by 0.15¢ on Tuesday, up by 0.75¢ on Wednesday and by 0.51¢ on Thursday to close at 87.83¢, up 1.87¢ (+2.2%) since the last sale.
