Benninger unveils new yarn tensioning system 'Multitens'

Multitens is a new yarn tensioning system for use in weaving preparation. This new development was unveiled at the ITMA 2007 trade show in Munich, where it met with great interest from the industry.

For the first time, Multitens now makes it possible to eliminate many of the problems associated with warp production and to take a great step forwards in terms of warp quality and productivity. At present, no comparable system is available in the market, making Benninger the sole supplier worldwide for a closed-loop controlled yarn tensioning system. This is an advantage we intend to make the most of.

The Multitens yarn tensioning system consists of a computer unit, the yarn tension sensors and the yarn tensioners. These elements form a closed-loop control circuit, i.e. the sensors measure and return the actual yarn tension values, which are compared to target values in the computer. The computer then sends a correction value to the yarn tensioner if the actual value does not match the target value. Every individual thread is monitored and regulated in this way. With a creel comprising 1000 threads, this means that 1000 closed-loop control circuits are working autonomously.

The computer unit, sensors and actuators communicate via a bus system in a similar fashion to PCs connected to a network. As a result, the effort required for installation is limited to the connection of a handful of cables.

The advantages of the Multitens system are that - with just a single system - it is possible to cover a thread tension range of 3-250 cN, technical and standard applications and draw-off speeds of up to 1200m/min. At present, several different conventional systems would be needed in order to cover the same range of applications.

Another advantage of the system is that it enables production data like the thread tension at a specific position to be configured along a complete warp. This is particularly important for technical applications in which certified fabrics are manufactured (airbags, medical applications,…).

We will be supplying the first systems to customers in Europe from the start of the second quarter of 2008.
