He also considered the matter of providing duty-free access to Pakistani textile products by the European Union as a matter of concern, as it would undermine the competitive edge of Indian textile exports vis-à-vis, exports from Pakistan, due to the tariff concession which has been approved for three years.

The next question was directed to Mr Jatin Mistry of Jupiter Coptex as to whether, Indian machinery manufacturers were capable of supplying quality low-cost sizing machines, to which he informed that, his company had already installed 22 machines and was in the process of installing eight more, which were high in quality and low on cost and they also planned to introduce a rope-dyeing machine by 2011.

Mr David Emrey when asked about the developments in the preparatory division, said, “His company was concentrating on the development of weaving machines and considered preparatory as a “necessary evil”. He added by saying that, they were trying to reduce costs to weavers, by maximizing weaving efficiency at minimum costs.

Mr Jhaver at this point of time interceded and jocularly said, “As to why, should the weavers be at the receiving end of the price increase and suffer the most, at a time when, the spinners were laughing all the way to bank”.

Mr Gupta then suggested for setting up a denim forum to lobby with the government since the denim sector was the largest user in the country and was consuming around 14 percent of cotton in the country, to which Mr Bandhopadhya seconded him by saying that since there were around 24 denim producers, the time was ripe to have such a forum and called upon Dr PR Roy to take the initiative for the same.

The concluding question of the discussion was directed to Mr Lomesh of Prashant Gropu and was asked about the recent developments in machinery, to which Lomesh informed that, their strength lay in sectional warping machines, mainly due to their collaboration with USA based, West Point and that they are also well-known for bringing out innovative technologies. They have also recently introduced sectional warping sizing machines for the denim industry and also a machine to deliver small samples of denim fabrics.
