The container shortage issue would be successfully addressed, with the matter been taken up with utmost urgency, Indian minister for ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal recently said. A committee with representatives from several ministries is looking at the issue. He was on a day-long visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai last week.

“All the concerned ministries have put up efforts in the right perspective," he was quoted as saying by a news agency.

Sonowal reviewed the progress made by the port through its public-private partnership initiatives, and engaged with JNPT’s key stakeholders.

To address the problem, the government in late September announced a three-month extension for the re-export of imported vessels lying at domestic ports.
