Trade friction with US severely affects bilateral relations, says Vice Premier Wu Yi

Wu Yi, Vice Premier of the State Council, met with Carlos Gutierrez, US Secretary of Commerce, and Rob Portman, US trade representative, exchanging views on China-US economic and trade relations deeply and sincerely.

Vice Premier Wu Yi said that last year, China-US economic and trade relations were generally good, cooperation was improved deeply, and the features of mutual benefit and win-win were obvious.

Chinese government attached great importance to China-US economic and trade relations and believed that to maintain sound and harmonious development of the two countries mattered China-US relations and was in accordance with interests of the two countries and their people.

We appreciated that US President Bush vetoed many motions and bills, which were not beneficial to China-US economic and trade development. We hope China and US join hands to keep and develop China-US cooperation in a long run.

Wu Yi said that textile was a significant problem that China and US were confronted, if not solved properly, it would severely affect bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and China will pay close attention to that. She said textile integration was great achievement of Uruguay Talks, and a foundation of multilateral trade system.

Wu Yi said China entered the WTO under the condition that right and obligation were balanced; we should be entitled to rights and interest of textile integration. We hope that the US recognizes the importance of problem and solve it.
