LDC & Tsunami affected countries support Ustrade Bill 2005 for RMG exports

The event was attended by Bangladesh Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan as chief guest . The Commerce Minister Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Advisor to the Commerce Ministry Md Barkat Ullah Bulu and others also attended the event as special guests.

Abdul Awal Mintoo, President of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) remained the guest of honour at the function.

Meanwhile, chamber leaders of the eight LDC countries including Maldives, Yemen, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, East Timor, Tuvalu and Vanuatu have also expressed their solidarity and unanimous support in the declaration, BGMEA President Annisul Huq informed,.

Others who spoke at the ocassion were acting General Manager of the SEDF Deepak P Adhikary, Resource Person of the Conference and Vice President of Trade Negotiations and Legislative Affairs, Sandler, Travis and Rosenberg, PA, USA, and Ms J Nicole Bivens Collinson.

Calling to rally support for the passage of bill to become an act in the US Senate, M Morshed Khan said it was an irony that Bangladesh and other LDCs paid a much higher tariff rates on their exportables as against those from the developed countries.

While calling the tariffs highly 'discriminatory,' Morshed drew a comparison saying, "With an export of $2.40 billion to the US market, Bangladeshi products are charged a $331 million tariff. By contrast, French exports are charged only $330 million foastast, French exports are charged only $330 million for a $24.2 billion exports," he added.
