US unveils Sh 90mn programme to boost Kenyan exports

The United States announced Sh90 million support trade programme to raise Kenya's exports at a global platform.

Addressing the meeting to launch the programme, The Chairman of Export Promotion Council (EPC) Peter Kimuyu stated that two-year programme would help to boost export activities and will set up new business relations around the world.

The US has restricted imports from Kenyan due to low-priced goods and quality products. However, Kenya is a beneficiary country under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) that provides privileged right of entry to the US market for nearly 6,000 products, he said.

Kimuyu explained that the US is tough markets for Kenyan exporters due to the high quality standards imposed by the US authorities.

Matanda Wabuyele, EPC Chief Executive said that improved Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) provides market access to US for nearly 6,000 products, but, textile and apparel commodities dominates the exports.

Trade and Industry Minister Mukhisa Kituyi informed that the trade preferences without encouraging programmes would result loss of opportunities.

He stated that a well planned - project is required to address supply-side limitations that many exporters face in accessing markets in the developed countries.
