Dupont Industrial Biosciences’ recent partnership with US food processing and commodities trading corporation Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and the launch of a pilot facility in Illinois involves taking fructose from corn starch and making a monomer called FDME through a chemical process, according to the company’s global product manager Rene Molina.

FDME can be used to create a variety of bio-based chemicals and materials, including cost-effective, efficient and sustainable plastics.

The first FDME-based polymer under development can either be used by itself or mixed with PET to improve the barrier properties of bottles, allowing companies to substantially reduce the amount of plastic required to package beverages, Molina told Fibre2Fashion in an interview. (DS)
