Umetrics' MODDE software at LANXESS
Leather chemical maker LANXESS Deutschland GmbH installed the new software 'MODDE'.
The Fine Chemicals Business Unit of LANXESS Deutschland GmbH has concluded an enterprise platform agreement with the Swedish software company Umetrics AB on the use of MODDE, a process development program for custom synthesis. This DoE program (design of experiment) allows the systematic planning and analysis of a trial series with a minimum number of experiments and simultaneous change of multiple parameters.
LANXESS develops and produces innovative fine chemicals, agrochemicals and pharmaceutical active ingredients. Each year new processes are developed and realized at various facilities for over a hundred chemical steps. The ultimate purpose is always to find a production process that is environment-friendly, economical and of a consistently high quality.
Success in chemical processing is determined by the fast development of cost-effective manufacturing processes and their adaptation to a given facility. Based on a large number of variables such as temperature, pressure, reaction time and different ingredients, the most important parameters need to be identified and optimized within a brief period of time.
To increase efficiency in custom synthesis, LANXESS's Fine Chemicals Business Unit began to explore the available options in computer-assisted process optimization and eventually decided to deploy MODDE. Following a two-month launch phase, the program was established as a chemical process development tool in early September.
