Predominently export oriented wool textile industry of Taiwan posted disappointing results for second quarter, this year.
Raw wool imports, mainly of greasy Australian origin, were significantly lower during the January-June period. A marginal improvement in the import of wool top was evident, along with a significant change in wool top sourcing away from Australia, to China.
However, the wool supplied to Taiwan's spinning sector remains overwhelmingly of Australian origin.
Wool top exports fell in Q2 2005 as a consequence of fewer
shipments to Japan, Korea and China (the country's major three export destinations for wool top).
In the context of Taiwan's textile industry wool exports have
performed reasonably well. Taiwan's textile exports (all fibres) have fallen in both volume and value in the first half of 2005.
With the removal of quotas in January competition from China, Korea and India has intensified whilst domestically, the industry is facing high raw material prices and labour shortages.
