Wool plays significant role at fabric fairs at France

Australian company Australian Wool Innovation Limited announced that last month the collections for Autumn/Winter 2006/07 were unveiled at key European events including Milano Unica in Milan, Prato Expo in Florence, Tissu Premiere, Texworld and Premiere Vision in Paris.

Overall wool was reported to be playing a significant role at these fabric fairs. The "British look" was a noteworthy trend in wool outerwear, seen in tweeds and checks (both traditional and richly coloured big checks). Prince of Wales check and pin stripes were offered in lighter blends including wool or cotton.

The "British look" has made its way across Italy and into France and is sure to be a major player at retail. Other notable trends included new finishes and technical coatings, crushing/wrinkling/crinkling and luxurious blends.

Fashion may well be trending towards wools and tweeds but the threat from other fibres, natural and synthetic continues to be real as they attempt to emulate what wool does naturally.

Wool's influence was evident in wool-effect cottons, with the feel of carded wool and a pre-washed or "blurred" look. Wool classic flannels and felt like effects were offered in polyester/viscose.

While it is extremely difficult to quantify the impact of these trends on the demand for wool apparel at retail and although strong representation atthe fairs does not always translate into demand, the signs are positive that wool will be a key player in apparel retail for 2006/07.

AWI initiates, commissions and delivers research and development (R&D) to Australian woolgrowers. Company work through alliances and contracts and, where possible, commercialise R&D outcomes. The primary aim is the adoption of technology - on farm and along the global wool pipeline.
