The Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC) has urged its 600 members to invest in the latest technology and machinery to increase efficiency, save electricity and turn more competitive by producing better-quality products as the country shifts from producing labour-intensive products to value-added manufacturing to attract more global clients.

GMAC operation manager Ly Tek Heng told the annual Cambodia International Textile and Garment Industry Exhibition and the Cambodia International Machinery Industry Fair last week that producing high-value garment products had become a necessity.

About 175 exhibitors from 17 countries showcased a broad range of products from key industrial sectors such as garments and textiles, plastics, packaging, printing, food processing, agriculture, auto parts and accessories, machine tools, energy and electrical engineering at the four-day fairs held in Koh Pich.

The grand event is jointly organized by GMAC, Yorkers Trade & Marketing Service Co Ltd, the ministry of industry and handicrafts and the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC).

To upgrade technology and machinery, GMAC also recently inaugurated the Cambodia Garment Training Centre Institute (CGTI), which it has set up with a soft loan from the French Development Agency. The centre will help workers in the garment and textile sector to equip themselves with more intensive skills to boost productivity. (DS)
